An Artistic Journey Through the Colors and Culture of South Africa
This is part of the Il Chiostro – Upside Down! series which mirrors our popular Autumn Arts Festival in Tuscany. In 2017, we kicked the program off to great success in South Africa. In 2018, we tangoed in sensual Argentina. Our last South Africa program was so popular that we decided to repeat it in 2026!
The Cape Town-Stellenbosch area has so much to explore, we created this program to discover the whole region with a different adventure every day. Join Marni Maree as you dig deep into the food, wine, culture, sights, and traditions of both the city of Cape Town and the smaller towns surrounding the famous wine region of Stellenbosch. This is a perfect program for non-painters too with plenty of excursions and cultural activities to keep you engaged. And if you have any interest in photography, this trip presents endless opportunities to capture the area from wild game to the Cape Town coast to the spectacular scenery of the Stellenbosch wine country! Come one, come all!

In Cape Town and South Africa in general, we find the merging of east & west, first & third. Cape Town (named one of the world’s 10 best cities to visit by Travel & Leisure) was originally discovered as a stopover on the spice route from Europe to the East, making it a bridge between both cultures. Threads of the east and the west are woven into most cultural elements, from the musical rhythms to the food.
Today, because of its history, South Africa is a fusion of first and third-world principles. They are embedded in the earth and soul of her food, music, art, and people. It should be noted that South Africa is home to 4 Nobel Peace laureates, including Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela.
About the Sketching and Watercolor program:
What a great way to record lasting memories! Through the program, we will visit Cape Town, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, and the Jordan Winery, where participants will have opportunities for sketching and painting at each location. Marni will demonstrate and teach various ways to see, draw, simplify a scene, and creatively collect information to fill up your sketchbooks.
There will be daily art “challenges” that will help you to think out of the box as you see and draw. You will also have ample time on your own to wander as you find new things to record.
At the end of each day of sketching and painting, you will return “home” for fine wine, food, and fellowship with the other artists. Casual and encouraging critiques and instruction will be offered each evening, or you can paint and relax on your own. You will also learn how to use your sketches to create larger paintings if you like.

Throughout our incredible adventure, we will stay at three fantastic locations:
Winchester Hotel – Cape Town: For our time in Cape Town, we’ll be staying at the iconic Winchester Hotel, one of the city’s most beloved landmarks—and for good reason. Perfectly situated on the Sea Point Promenade with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and Table Mountain, this stylish hotel blends historic charm with modern luxury, making it the ideal base for our group to relax, recharge, and soak in the beauty of the Mother City.
From the moment you step into its grand courtyard and elegant interiors, you’ll feel the warm hospitality and classic sophistication that define the Winchester experience. Spacious, well-appointed rooms offer the comfort you need after a day of exploring, while shared spaces like the oceanfront terrace and lush inner gardens provide plenty of opportunity to unwind and connect with fellow travelers.
We’ll enjoy group breakfasts in the hotel’s vibrant restaurant, Shoreditch, and be just minutes from top Cape Town attractions like the V&A Waterfront, Table Mountain cableway, Clifton beaches, and more. Whether you're enjoying a sunset walk along the promenade or joining in one of our planned excursions, you’ll appreciate how well-located and welcoming this hotel truly is.
The Winchester is more than just a place to sleep—it’s an experience in itself, and a highlight of our Cape Town journey.

Sanbona Game Reserve: Get ready for an unforgettable adventure in one of South Africa’s premier private game reserves. As part of our group journey, we’ll venture into the heart of the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, a 58,000-hectare conservation haven tucked away in the dramatic landscapes of the Little Karoo, just a few hours from Cape Town.
Sanbona offers a truly immersive Big Five safari experience—but with a twist. Here, conservation and comfort go hand in hand. The reserve is home to free-roaming wildlife including lions, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, cheetahs, and rare white lions, all thriving in their natural environment. It’s one of the few places in the Western Cape where you can see these majestic animals without the crowds.
We’ll stay in one of Sanbona’s beautifully designed lodges or tented camps, each offering a unique blend of luxury and wilderness. Enjoy morning and evening game drives with expert rangers, indulge in delicious group meals under the stars, and relax between activities with serene views, spa treatments, or a dip in the pool.
What makes Sanbona perfect for our group is its balance of adventure, exclusivity, and comfort. Whether it’s your first safari or your tenth, Sanbona promises something truly special—a chance to disconnect, reconnect with nature, and share an extraordinary journey with like-minded travelers.

Jordan Winery: On our final leg of the trip, we’ll be spending time at the stunning Jordan Wine Estate, nestled in the world-renowned Stellenbosch wine region. This family-owned estate is one of the Cape’s most celebrated wine destinations, offering not only award-winning wines but also breathtaking views, gourmet cuisine, and tranquil luxury accommodations—all set on a working vineyard.
Our group will have the opportunity to explore the vineyards and cellar with a private wine tasting, learning about the unique terroir that makes Jordan’s wines stand out on the global stage. Between sips, we’ll enjoy leisurely strolls through the estate, relax on panoramic terraces, and dine on farm-to-table cuisine at The Jordan Restaurant—one of South Africa’s top culinary experiences.
Accommodation at the estate’s beautifully appointed suites offers a peaceful escape, surrounded by vineyards, mountains, and the gentle rhythms of nature. Whether you're enjoying an early morning coffee with a view, taking part in a group tasting, or simply soaking in the serenity, Jordan offers the perfect blend of sophistication and comfort.
This stop is more than just a break in the journey—it’s a celebration of South African wine, food, and hospitality. Jordan Wine Estate will be a highlight of our group trip, offering moments of connection, indulgence, and inspiration in one of the most scenic corners of the country.

All participants will be required to travel independently to Cape Town per their own arrangements.
We will meet at the Winchester Hotel on Friday, March 13th, at 5 pm for an orientation, followed by our first dinner together.

Entry Requirements: U.S. citizens traveling to South Africa for tourism or business purposes do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. However, they must present a valid U.S. passport with at least two blank pages for entry stamps and a validity of at least 30 days beyond the intended departure date. Upon arrival, travelers may be asked to show proof of sufficient funds, return or onward tickets, and details of their accommodation.
While there are no mandatory vaccinations for entry from the U.S., a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission.
For additional assistance, please refer to the U.S. Department of State webpage, which will break down all requirements in further detail.

Flights: While there are no year-round direct flights, United Airlines operates a seasonal nonstop service from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Cape Town International Airport (CPT), typically between December and March.
For the rest of the year, U.S. travelers can reach Cape Town via connecting flights from major cities such as New York, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C., with layovers in cities like Johannesburg, London, Frankfurt, or Doha. Airlines such as Delta, American Airlines, and United provide these routes.
Cape Town International Airport (CPT) is the primary airport serving the city and is located about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the city center. Upon arrival, travelers can access various transportation options, including taxis, ride-sharing services, and rental cars, to reach their accommodations.
It's advisable to check the latest travel advisories and entry requirements before planning your trip, as regulations can change.
All participants will be required to travel independently to Cape Town per their own arrangements.

Arrival: Traveling from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) to The Winchester Hotel in Sea Point is straightforward, with several convenient transportation options available.
The most direct method is by taxi, which typically takes about 21 minutes to cover the approximately 23-kilometer distance, with fares ranging from R120 to R150. Alternatively, ride-hailing services such as Uber, Bolt, and Didi are readily available at the airport. After booking your ride, proceed to the designated e-hailing pickup area at Parkade 2. Fares for these services vary based on traffic and demand but generally fall within a similar range.
For those preferring a pre-arranged transfer, private shuttle services like EZ Shuttle and Airport Shuttle Cape Town offer reliable door-to-door service. These can be booked in advance online or via phone, with prices typically ranging from R1,000 to R1,300, depending on the provider and vehicle type.
The Winchester Hotel itself offers an airport shuttle service, which can be arranged through the 24-hour reception desk. This service operates from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM during the summer season and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
For budget-conscious travelers, the MyCiTi bus service provides a cost-effective option. You can take the MyCiTi bus from the airport to the Civic Center station in the city center. From there, you may need to transfer to another bus or arrange for a taxi to reach the hotel, as direct routes to Sea Point may not be available.
All participants will be required to travel independently to The Winchester per their own arrangements.

Travel Agents & Insurance: Over the last few years, the way we travel has undergone significant changes. For that reason, we now encourage everyone to use a professional travel agent when arranging their trips. Travel agents save you time and stress by handling all the details and tailoring your itinerary to your needs. One of the most important services they offer today is helping you choose and enroll in the right travel insurance program. With COVID and the continued possibility of schedule changes or postponements, travel insurance has become essential, and selecting the right plan on your own can be overwhelming.
If you encounter any issues during your travels, your agent can provide quick support and solutions, taking the pressure off your shoulders. While booking through online sites like Expedia or Hotels.com may seem more convenient or less expensive, they offer little help if you need to modify your plans. A travel professional, on the other hand, is there to assist you every step of the way, ensuring a smooth and worry-free travel experience.
If you choose to Go It Alone, we highly recommend taking out travel insurance for the trip in the event of any unforeseen obstacles to your travel. We recommend Travelex (800) 504-7883 or Travel Guard International (877) 901-7599.
Please enjoy the following fun facts about the various stunning locations we will visit during our adventures!
South Africa is a fascinating country known for its rich diversity and unique characteristics. It is the only country in the world with three capital cities—Pretoria (executive), Bloemfontein (judicial), and Cape Town (legislative)—and boasts 11 official languages, making it one of the most linguistically diverse nations. Often referred to as the "Cradle of Humankind," South Africa is home to some of the oldest hominid fossils ever discovered. Within this vibrant country, Cape Town stands out as a cultural and natural gem.
Dominated by the iconic Table Mountain—one of the New7Wonders of Nature and older than the Himalayas—Cape Town is also famous for the Castle of Good Hope, the country’s oldest surviving colonial building. The city blends Dutch, British, Malay, and indigenous cultures and offers unique attractions such as Boulders Beach, where visitors can see African penguins up close.
In the coastal suburb of Sea Point, visitors and locals enjoy the scenic Sea Point Promenade, a popular stretch perfect for jogging, cycling, and leisurely walks alongside the Atlantic Ocean. The area features charming Victorian and Edwardian architecture, reflecting its history as one of Cape Town’s earliest seaside suburbs. Sea Point is also known for its public tidal pools, which provide safe and picturesque swimming spots. Thanks to its position on the Atlantic Seaboard, Sea Point experiences a milder and breezier microclimate compared to other parts of the city, making it a refreshing escape and a must-visit location when exploring Cape Town.
Sanbona Game Reserve, nestled in South Africa's Little Karoo region, is one of the Western Cape’s largest privately owned nature reserves, covering over 58,000 hectares. Once farmland, the area has been carefully restored to its natural state, now hosting a range of wildlife including the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo.
A unique aspect of Sanbona is its focus on conservation and ecological restoration, with efforts to reintroduce species that once roamed the region freely. The reserve is also home to rare white lions, which are not albinos but owe their coloration to a recessive gene. Sanbona offers more than just wildlife; it boasts ancient San rock art sites, some over 3,500 years old, giving visitors a glimpse into the cultural heritage of the indigenous San people. The landscape itself is diverse, ranging from rugged mountains to wide open plains and river valleys, making it a haven for both nature lovers and photographers.
Stellenbosch, founded in 1679, is the second oldest town in South Africa and is renowned for its rich history, charming streets, and vibrant culture. Often referred to as “Eikestad” or “Oak City” due to the many oak trees planted by early settlers, the town is known for its well-preserved Cape Dutch architecture, giving it a distinctive and timeless character. The town is home to Stellenbosch University, one of Africa’s top academic institutions, adding youthful energy and intellectual vibrancy to the area. In addition to its academic and vinicultural prestige, Stellenbosch boasts a thriving arts and culinary scene, with numerous galleries, museums, restaurants, and artisanal food producers making it a cultural and gastronomic destination. Whether you're there for the history, the wine, the food, or the art, Stellenbosch offers a uniquely rich and inspiring experience.
Stellenbosch is a premier wine destination in South Africa, home to over 150 wine estates nestled among rolling vineyards and dramatic mountains. The region’s rich soils and Mediterranean climate make it ideal for producing world-class wines, especially bold reds like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and the uniquely South African Pinotage, as well as crisp whites like Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc. From historic estates to boutique wineries, many offer gourmet dining, art, and scenic tasting experiences. Stellenbosch wine country invites visitors to slow down, savor the landscape, and enjoy the rich blend of wine, culture, and natural beauty.
Jordan Wine Estate, nestled in the scenic Stellenbosch region of South Africa, is a captivating destination that seamlessly blends rich history, innovative winemaking, and natural beauty. Established in 1982 by Ted and Sheelagh Jordan, the 164-hectare estate has a grape-growing heritage spanning over 300 years. Their son, Gary, a geologist, and his wife, Kathy, an economist, took the reins in 1993, bringing a unique synergy of science and business acumen to the vineyard

The estate's diverse topography, with slopes facing all cardinal directions and elevations ranging from 160 to 410 meters above sea level, creates a variety of microclimates. This allows for the cultivation of classic grape varieties, each thriving in its optimal conditions. Visitors can indulge in a range of experiences, from guided cellar tours and wine tastings to vineyard safaris in open Land Rovers, offering panoramic views of Table Mountain, False Bay, and the Stellenbosch Mountains.
Beyond its wines, Jordan Wine Estate offers luxurious accommodations in its individually designed suites, providing a tranquil retreat amidst the vineyards. The estate also boasts a bakery and a fine-dining restaurant, where guests can savor dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients, reflecting the estate's commitment to sustainability and excellence.
Jordan Wine Estate stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, offering an unforgettable experience for wine enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Watercolor Artist & Instructor

Marni Maree’s vibrant watercolors are a joyful reflection of her love for drawing, her desire to create beauty, and the inner happiness she finds through artistic expression. Known for her rich use of color and dynamic compositions, Marni is especially inspired by flowers, camels, and the diverse scenes she encounters during her travels around the world. She never ventures far without her sketchbook and compact painting supplies—always ready to capture the unique spirit of the people and places she visits.
A graduate of Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, PA, Marni holds a BFA and began her career as a freelance graphic artist. Over time, her creative journey led her from colored pencils to watercolor, now her primary medium. She enjoys experimenting with different surfaces, including traditional watercolor paper, Yupo (a smooth synthetic material), masa (rice paper), and canvas. Because watercolor reacts differently on each, Marni finds the process refreshingly unpredictable, with each piece offering a new and exciting artistic challenge.
Marni is also a dedicated and passionate teacher. Since 2014, she has led annual international watercolor workshops (with IlChiostro since 2017), which begin with plein air sessions in Virginia and continue with immersive painting experiences in inspiring destinations abroad. When students return home, the creative journey continues through group gatherings and shared painting sessions, evolving into lasting friendships.
Locally, Marni teaches watercolor and drawing throughout Northern Virginia at the Workhouse Arts Center, Green Spring Gardens, various retirement communities, on cruise ships, and in her private studio. Her popular workshops are known for being encouraging, inspiring, and accessible to all levels. With an emphasis on playfulness, spontaneity, and discovery, Marni helps students tap into their creativity in a supportive and joyful environment.
Marni exhibits her work year-round at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA, where she maintains a beautiful studio. She regularly participates in regional group exhibitions and has held solo shows annually for over 25 years. Her award-winning watercolors are widely recognized for their vibrancy and emotional resonance.
She is an active member of the Springfield Art Guild, the Virginia Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, and the Potomac Valley Watercolorists, a juried organization of professional watercolor artists.
