Finding Inspiration Through an Exceptional Artist

During this eight-day workshop, you will sketch and paint in the same Tuscan locations where John Singer Sargent painted en plein air, exploring the qualities of form and light that inspired him. This immersive experience will allow you to connect more intimately with Florence and Tuscany. Rather than depicting grand landscapes or famous cityscapes, Sargent focused on intimate studies of light over both manmade and natural forms, captivated by the way colors shifted across varied surfaces and structures. Tuscany’s sunlit villas, Renaissance courtyards, sparkling fountains, Baroque sculptures, and classical and medieval architecture—so masterfully captured by Sargent—remain for us to experience today.
You will spend the first three days in Florence, followed by five days in the Chianti vineyard area of Tuscany. Each day, Wennie will provide at least two live demonstrations, primarily in watercolor with touches of gouache, drawing from Sargent’s approach to composition, color, light and shadow, movement, gesture, and brushwork. You’ll have the opportunity to position yourselves near the vantage points Sargent once chose, guided by reproductions of his watercolors. From there, you can select a spot to work from direct observation, with Wennie available on-site for individual guidance and feedback.
Optional sunrise and sunset painting sessions near your accommodations will allow you to independently observe the iconic Tuscan light and color. On days of inclement weather, you will work from sheltered locations or use reference snapshots back at the villa. Between lessons, you’ll gather informally to share your sketches and paintings, refining your technique, composition, and appreciation for Sargent’s passion for painting Italy en plein air.

More on John Singer Sargent
John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), the most celebrated portraitist of the 19th century, was born in Florence in 1856, into traditions rich in both classical history and creative innovation.
Throughout his career as a portrait painter and following his retirement, the American ex-patriate painter and world traveler sojourned in various Italian villas accompanied by family and friends, painting in the most celebrated Renaissance and Baroque gardens and villas in Tuscany including the Boboli Gardens of the Medici in Florence, Villa Medici Castillo, and Lemon Garden at Villa Reale de Marlia in Lucca as well as in the lush rural Tuscan countryside outside of Siena, renowned for vineyards and dotted with Chianini cattle.
His watercolors which capture garden fountains, figures, architecture, and the cultivated nature of the region remain to this day fresh and unconventional, continuing to inspire generations of artists.

Residence Michelangiolo For the first three days we will be staying at the Residence Michelangiolo along the Viale Michelangiolo in the quieter Oltr`arno section of Florence. This is a beautifully renovated private palazzo on a tree-lined residential street near the Arno. The owner still manages the property and makes each person feel like a guest of his family.

The residence features elegantly furnished suites with high ceilings, classic Italian decor, and modern amenities such as kitchenettes, air conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Guests can relax in the lush private garden or explore nearby landmarks like the Ponte Vecchio and the Uffizi Gallery. With its blend of old-world charm and contemporary comfort, Residence Michelangiolo provides an intimate and luxurious stay in the heart of Florence.

Borgo Casa al Vento is just that - a borgo or small hamlet. Dating from the medieval era, this village has been renovated to have a second life as an authentic winery-hotel in the middle of the Chianti hills of Tuscany. All rooms are different, created from the homes of the borgo. All have modern bathrooms and conveniences like Wi-fi, refrigerators, and air conditioning. This stunning location will be our home for the final five days of the workshop.

The property has its own restaurant, snack bar, 2 swimming pools and a wellness spa (massage services, including a wine bath, charged separately).
Since this is a Chianti winery, we will enjoy the wines of the property with dinners along with an optional winery tour and tasting. There are gardens and terraces with panoramic vistas from every angle. The property is near the town of Gaiole-in-Chianti and 40 minutes from the city of Siena.

You should arrive at the hotel independently during the day on Thursday. Our first activity will be a welcome gathering at about 6:30 pm. From there, we will proceed to a restaurant in the center for dinner together. The first session of your workshop will be on Friday morning. Departure will be by noon on the following Friday.
We recommend that you fly to Florence or Rome (Milan is a bit too far away). One thing to consider is that there are more flights from the US to Rome, many of them direct. Florence does not have an intercontinental airport, so there are no direct flights from the US. You will have to change planes in a larger city. If you fly into Rome, you can take a train to Florence. From either the Florence airport or the train station, you can take a taxi directly to the hotel. Further directions will follow.
After we have enjoyed our time in Florence, our team will provide transportation to Casa al Vento in Tuscany. Further instructions will be provided closer to the travel dates.
Important! In making your return flight arrangements, if you are flying home on Friday from Rome, try not to book a flight too early. From our location, it will take approximately 3 ½ hours to reach the Rome airport.
Check our travel to Italy section for specific suggestions on booking airfare, trains, or buses.
Travel Agents & Insurance: Over the last few years, the way we travel has undergone significant changes. For that reason, we now encourage everyone to use a professional travel agent when arranging their trips. Travel agents save you time and stress by handling all the details and tailoring your itinerary to your needs. One of the most important services they offer today is helping you choose and enroll in the right travel insurance program. With COVID and the continued possibility of schedule changes or postponements, travel insurance has become essential, and selecting the right plan on your own can be overwhelming.
If you encounter any issues during your travels, your agent can provide quick support and solutions, taking the pressure off your shoulders. While booking through online sites like Expedia or Hotels.com may seem more convenient or less expensive, they offer little help if you need to modify your plans. A travel professional, on the other hand, is there to assist you every step of the way, ensuring a smooth and worry-free travel experience.
If you choose to Go It Alone, we highly recommend taking out travel insurance for the trip in the event of any unforeseen obstacles to your travel. We recommend Travelex (800) 504-7883 or Travel Guard International (877) 901-7599.
Located in the Tuscan countryside just outside Gaiole in Chianti, Borgo Casa Al Vento is a restored medieval village that beautifully captures the essence of Chianti.
The property is surrounded by vineyards, providing a serene and picturesque backdrop for a week of painting. The farmhouse retains its Tuscan charm while providing comfortable accommodations with modern amenities, like air conditioning and Wi-Fi. The on-site restaurant, where the group will dine together, serves farm-to-table dishes that showcase local cuisine, prepared with seasonal and traditional ingredients, and wines produced in the surrounding vineyards.
The farmhouse offers a wellness center with unique treatments like wine baths, wine therapy, and various massages for anyone who wants to enjoy the spa during free time. The property also features a panoramic pool, a small lake, and sports facilities, including a tennis court and table tennis, all available during your stay.
The farmhouse is just a 30-minute drive to Siena, one of our favorite excursion spots. The location also provides easy access to some of the region's beautiful hill towns, which can easily be added as day trips for the group.
