Transportation in Italy

Getting There

Traveling around Italy is easy, and there are many different ways to get to where you need to go during your stay. From trains and buses to car rentals, here is everything you need to know to get on the road. ((Remember, for all our creative workshops located outside major cities, we provide transportation to the workshop location, so you don’t have to worry about your arrival plans when traveling with Il Chiostro).

Trains

Italy boasts a comprehensive railway system, making travel between cities and towns efficient and convenient.

Here are some key points to note:

  • For current fares and schedules, visit www.trenitalia.it. If you’re traveling to a major city like Florence, Rome or Venice look for discounted fares on www.italotreno.it/en.
  • Arriving at Rome’s airports, such as Leonardo da Vinci or Fiumicino, you can catch the Leonardo Express train directly to the city center. Simply follow the signs for Treni/Trains upon clearing customs. The journey takes approximately 40 minutes, with trains departing every half hour.
  • Many smaller stations, like Siena, may lack elevators or escalators, so be prepared to handle your luggage on the stairs.
  • If you have a paper ticket, remember to validate your ticket before boarding the train using the green or yellow machines located on the platforms. Failure to do so may result in fines. Buying a ticket online is also an easy option. Digital tickets will be scanned by the conductor on the train.
  • It’s no longer possible to purchase tickets on the train. Ensure you have a paper or digital ticket before boarding.
  • Consider reserving seats, especially for popular routes, because trains can be oversold. Having a ticket doesn’t guarantee a seat, and you may end up standing for the duration of your trip.
  • Automatic ticket machines, available at most stations, offer instructions in English and accept cash or credit cards, providing a convenient alternative to ticket counters.

Buses

Intercity buses offer a comfortable and often faster alternative to trains, with designated luggage storage.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The SITA bus system serves Florence and Siena efficiently, with the RAPIDA (the fast bus) recommended for travel between these cities.
  • A convenient bus company called Flixbus connects Rome and Siena (and many other locations throughout Italy), offering an inexpensive, non-stop 3-hour journey between those cities.
  • In Siena, the bus stops at either the train station or the city center, while in Rome, it stops at the Tiburtina train station, convenient for airport connections.
  • From the Florence airport, you have several options. The Volainbus shuttle provides frequent service into the city center, with tickets available for purchase onboard. For just €1,50 you can also take the tramway that connects the Florence airport and the City Centre train station.

Car Rental

If you prefer the freedom of driving, there are various rental options to consider:

  • Most rental cars in Italy are standard transmission, with automatic cars available at a higher cost. Consider reserving ahead and opting for diesel fuel for cost savings.
  • Arrange your rental through major companies like Hertz, Avis, or AutoEurope, or explore competitive prices on platforms like www.carrentals.com.
  • Be mindful of hidden cameras monitoring speed on highways and in historic town centers. Traffic violation fines are billed through rental agencies and passed on to you.

For a hassle-free journey, consider arranging a private car service to transport you to your Il Chiostro workshop:
