In my 25+ years of teaching painting, I’ve found many students struggle to mix the colors that they want to achieve. It’s easy to get frustrated, overwhelmed, and confused and to have unwanted, muddy colors show up on your canvas or paper. We’ve all learned the color wheel principles in school, and while that’s helpful, there’s more to mixing the paints in your tubes. Understanding how to translate the principles of color into practical application can make color mixing much easier and more fun.
In this 3 hour zoom class, I will share what I have learned that guides my color choices and has helped simplify color mixing. I will share the why and how behind color mixing and we will do some exercises together that will help you have more skill and confidence in mixing colors that vary in intensity, value and color temperature.
You will gain a better understanding of what colors to mix to get the colors you have in mind for your painting and WHY to make those choices. Your completed exercises can also serve as ongoing references for you to keep.
For one of our exercises, we will do a deep dive into the color green which can be especially challenging and is a color that is crucial to handle well for landscape and floral paintings.
