Italian Easter Traditions

the Vatican in Vatican City

Easter in Italy is a time to come together to enjoy delicious food and celebrate religious and family traditions. Each region of Italy has its own way of celebrating the season. Here are a few that stand out.

One of the most famous Italian Easter traditions is the “Scoppio del Carro” or “Explosion of the Cart”.

This tradition takes place in Florence on Easter Sunday. A cart filled with fireworks is pulled through the streets of Florence by a team of white oxen. The cart is then set on fire, and the fireworks explode in a spectacular display of light and sound. This tradition dates back to the 15th century and is believed to bring good luck and prosperity to the city.

Another popular Easter tradition in Italy is the “Pasqua a Roma” or “Easter in Rome.”

On Easter Sunday, the Pope delivers a special St. Peter’s Square mass. Thousands of people from all over the world gather to attend this mass and receive the Pope’s blessing. After the mass, many people participate in a traditional Roman Easter lunch, which usually includes lamb, artichokes, and other Italian dishes.

Sicily has a tradition of “La Processione dei Misteri” or “The Procession of the Mysteries.”

This religious procession takes place on Good Friday and people dress up in traditional costumes and carry statues of religious figures through the streets.

Easter in Italy is also known for its sweet treats. One of the most popular Easter desserts is the “Colomba di Pasqua,” a dove-shaped cake made with flour, sugar, eggs, and candied fruits. Another popular treat is the “Uova di Pasqua” or “Easter eggs.” These are not your typical chocolate eggs, but  hollow and filled with surprise gifts and treats.

Easter in Italy is a time of celebration, religious devotion, and cultural traditions. Whether in Florence, Rome, or Sicily, there is something special and unique to experience during this time of year.
