Rome is Love at First Sight – Tips for Your First Visit to the Eternal City

The Vatican in Vatican City at night

Rome is a beautiful, lively city that overflows with exciting things to see, fantastic food to eat, and endless surprises to discover. There are so many amazing sights to see in Rome you could easily spend weeks exploring the city and still not see everything.

While we love exploring Rome and finding hidden gems away from the crowds, we know there are a few top spots on every “must-see” list, especially for first-time visitors.

Here are some suggestions for places to visit during your first trip to Rome. (Or, even better, come with us in September for A Culinary Adventure in Roma!):

  • The Colosseum – A must-see for any first-time visitor to Rome. This ancient amphitheater is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
  • The Pantheon – A magnificent temple built in honor of all the gods of Ancient Rome. It’s a stunning architectural feat, and the interior is breathtaking.
  • The Roman Forum – This sprawling archaeological site is where the heart of Ancient Rome once stood. You can wander through the ruins of temples, basilicas, and government buildings.
  • The Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica – One of the world’s greatest art collections is housed in the Vatican Museums. Don’t miss the Sistine Chapel and Raphael Rooms. St. Peter’s Basilica is the largest church in the world and an architectural masterpiece.
  • The Trevi Fountain – One of the most beautiful fountains in Rome. Legend has it that if you throw a coin over your shoulder into the fountain, you’ll return to Rome one day.
  • The Spanish Steps – A beautiful staircase that leads up to the Church of Trinità dei Monti. The view from the top is spectacular.
  • The Borghese Gallery – A stunning collection of art housed in a beautiful villa. Highlights include works by Bernini, Caravaggio, and Raphael.
  • The Piazza Navona – A picturesque square with a beautiful fountain and Baroque architecture.
  • The Appian Way – An ancient Roman road that once connected Rome to the southern part of Italy. It’s a beautiful place for a walk or bike ride.
  • The Trastevere neighborhood – A charming and lively neighborhood with narrow streets, colorful buildings, and plenty of restaurants and cafes.
