Everyone Has a Story to Share – Memoir Writing with Jennifer Browdy

Jennifer Browdy, Ph.D doesn’t believe you need to think of yourself as a writer with a capital “W” to write a memoir. She believes we all have something to share about our lives that will benefit others. As a college literature and writing professor for more than 30 years, Jennifer has always tried to break down the boundary between the academic and the real-world to help writers with varied backgrounds and experiences share their stories.

Jennifer is hosting a workshop in Tuscany this May. Her students will learn the keys to memoir writing, enjoy excursions into the Italian countryside, and savor fantastic food and wine with new friends. She hopes students will find inspiration from the location and use experiences from the present to spark creativity and ideas about the past.

Jennifer knows that starting a memoir, or any writing, can be challenging. Many students don’t know where to focus or how to organize their thoughts and put them down on paper. She asks students to look at the people, places, pursuits, and passions that shaped their lives and ask – what about this story will benefit others? During the workshop, students will be guided in exercises to help explore the past and write the story of their life.

Jennifer is a literature, writing, and media arts professor at Bard College at Simon’s Rock and the online global Bard Open Society University Network, with a special focus on purposeful memoir and media arts for social and environmental justice. She coined the term “purposeful memoir” to describe the contemplative process of looking backward in order to understand the present more fully, which is necessary inner work for all who wish to change the world for the better.
